Tip of the Knife, Issue 7

INTRODUCTION

Vispo takes language or verbal signification of some sort and gives it a material presence and/or visual context. The development of this hybrid art form has always pushed the envelope of what constitutes signification. No matter how much, or in what direction, this envelope is pushed, it is never destroyed. The use of letters or verbal fragments would be one way the envelope has often been pushed. Asemic writing would be another. Another involves images that might be “read” or interpreted as verbal signs. This last direction is the most unclear but that doesn't mean it should be excluded. Vispo embraces the fact that we live in worlds of words, for better and for worse, whether we like it or not. Freedom from the verbal prison ( the virus of language, as William Burroughs famously called it ) does not come from the dream or illusion of silence, it comes from discovering the beauty and poetry of our verbally constructed modern world. Vispo plays an important role in helping to convey this truth, in helping us open our eyes and see that the only route to light is through reality filtered through language at every turn.
